FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Archimedes® One

What is the Archimedes® One?

Archimedes® One is a Dynamic Adherent Bioreactor — a new category of bioreactor that enables adherent cell culture with integrated process monitoring and automated harvesting. It’s designed to bring the scalability and control of a bioreactor to adherent cell processes, without requiring cell adaptation or additional hardware complexity.

What problem does Archimedes® One solve?

CellScrew® is a dynamic adherent cell culture system that combines the simplicity of roller bottles with the surface of cell stacks, without the downsides of either. Defined mixing, homogeneous cell distribution, and scalable geometry enable reproducible adherent processes across all sizes.

Adherent cell therapy developers today face a difficult trade-off: manual 2D systems are labor-intensive and hard to scale; suspension systems often require cell adaptation that can affect product characteristics; fixed-bed bioreactors come with significant hardware overhead. The Archimedes® One sits in a different category — scalable, controllable, and biology-first.

What cell types is Archimedes® One compatible with?

The core of Archimedes® One is the CellScrew® technology suitable for cell lines like MSC, iPSC, macrophages, fibroblasts, HEK-293, CHO, Vero and more.

What growth surface area does Archimedes® One provide?

Archimedes® One is based on the CellScrew® 10K providing 10,000 cm² of growth surface.

How does harvesting in Archimedes® One work?

Harvesting is automated and standardized, replacing manual detachment steps. This supports improved reproducibility and reduces operator-to-operator variability — a key requirement for GMP manufacturing.

What biocontrollers is it compatible with?

Archimedes® One is compatible with standard biocontrollers for pH, dissolved oxygen, and temperature. It does not require custom subsystems or conditioning vessels — so it integrates with equipment you likely already have.

Can it be used in GMP manufacturing?

It is designed with a clear path toward GMP. Automated, standardized harvesting and integrated process monitoring support the documentation and reproducibility requirements of a GMP environment.

Do I use the CellScrew® or the Archimedes® One — or both?

The CellScrew® is the cultivation technology at the heart of both systems — you’ll always be working with it. The difference is in how it’s operated. In a standard workflow, the CellScrew® is used manually. The Archimedes® One takes the same cultivation technology and integrates it into an automated, perfusion-based bioreactor system with process monitoring and standardized harvesting. So it’s not an either/or choice — it’s about whether your process calls for a manual or an automated workflow.

How do I get access?

Archimedes® One is currently available through the Early Access Program. Selected cell therapy companies and CDMOs gain early access to production units, dedicated technical support, and the opportunity to generate application data ahead of full commercial launch. Apply at greenelephantbiotech.com/eap.

When will it be commercially available?

Archimedes® One will be available for pre-orders from July 15th to support budgeting for 2027 while delivery will take place in Q1 of 2027.
