Green Elephant Biotech GmbH, a German-based company developing, manufacturing and marketing laboratory consumables made from plant-based biopolymers will pursue certification under the My Green Lab ACT Ecolabel 2.0 Program for selected products in its portfolio, with an anticipated completion of certification being listed as January 30, 2026.
This initiative reflects Green Elephant Biotech’s commitment to driving sustainable innovation in the life sciences sector and responding to the growing demand from scientists, procurement teams, and institutions for independently verified sustainability data. By working towards ACT Ecolabel 2.0 certification, Green Elephant Biotech aims to support its customers’ sustainability goals while strengthening its commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement across its product portfolio.
“Our efforts to certify products to the ACT Ecolabel 2.0 Standard are an important step toward aligning our product development with the highest standards of environmental responsibility,” said Felix Wollenhaupt, co-founder and managing director of Green Elephant Biotech.
The first products undergoing the ACT Ecolabel 2.0 evaluation are the Green Elephant 96-well microPLAtes, which are made entirely from polylactic acid (PLA), a biopolymer derived from corn starch as a renewable alternative to commonly used fossil-based plastics like polystyrene (PS) or polyethylene (PE). A third-party LCA contracted by Green Elephant indicates that the plates’ CO₂ emissions over the full product lifecycle to be 50% lower than fossil-based counterparts. (This statement has not been evaluated by My Green Lab.)
“ACT Ecolabel 2.0 provides the standardized approach and third-party verification of claims that enables transparency and comparability, helping customers make more informed and confident choices.” said Joel Eichmann, co-founder and managing director of Green Elephant Biotech.
The My Green Lab ACT Ecolabel is the world’s premier ecolabel for laboratory products. The program ensures ACT (Accountability, Consistency, and Transparency) in the reporting of environmental impact data to enable sustainable laboratory procurement. By providing needed transparency around manufacturing, product content, energy and water use, packaging, and end-of-life options, the ACT Ecolabel makes it easier to choose environmentally preferable products and to reduce the carbon impact of laboratory supply chains.
Green Elephant Biotech’s initiative to begin pursuing ACT Ecolabel 2.0 certification of their 96-well plates marks an important step in the broader movement in the life sciences industry toward more sustainable research and manufacturing practices. Look for ACT-certified products from Green Elephant Biotech soon (anticipated completion of certification being listed as January 30, 2026).
About Green Elephant:
Green Elephant Biotech was founded with two driving forces: making advanced therapies more accessible by changing how cells are manufactured and making the life sciences industry more sustainable. Their flagship CellScrew® is a compact, 3D-printed system designed to simplify and streamline the expansion of adherent cells, providing an efficient and scalable solution from research to clinical manufacturing. At the same time, the company applies plant-based bioplastics to traditional labware, such as the Green Elephant® microPLAte - a 96-well plate that delivers high performance with 50% less environmental impact. Founded in 2021 as a university spin-off, Green Elephant Biotech operates from Berlin and Giessen with a growing international team. For more information, visit www.greenelephantbiotech.com.
About My Green Lab:
My Green Lab is a non-profit environmental organization with a mission to build a global culture of sustainability in science. The organization is the world leader in developing internationally recognized sustainability standards for laboratories and laboratory products, bringing sustainability to the community responsible for the world’s life-changing medical and technical innovations. Laboratories are one of the most resource-intensive spaces in any industry, but they don’t have to be. By introducing both a new perspective and proven best practices within a carefully crafted framework, My Green Lab has inspired tens of thousands of scientists to make a positive change in their labs by reducing the environmental impact of their work.
