FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

CellScrew®

What is CellScrew®?

CellScrew® is a cell culture vessel used to grow adhere cells. Its unique Archimedes screw design means it’s a dynamic cell culture vessel that increases surface area and promotes robust, reproducible growth of adherent cells compared to traditional 2D culture systems.

What are the benefits of using the CellScrew®?

CellScrew® is a dynamic adherent cell culture system that combines the simplicity of roller bottles with the surface of cell stacks, without the downsides of either. Defined mixing, homogeneous cell distribution, and scalable geometry enable reproducible adherent processes across all sizes.

The CellScrew® makes processes smaller (fewer vessels, less labor), with one CellScrew® replacing multiple other vessels. It is also a single format that grows with the program from R&D to clinic and commercial manufacturing.

Which cell lines can be cultivated in the CellScrew®?

The CellScrew® is TC-treated and has been tested with various adherent cell lines, including mouse fibroblasts (L-929), human kidney cells (HEK-293), CHOs, MDCK, Vero, iPSC and mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs).

Can cells be observed under the microscope in the CellScrew®?

No, cells in the CellScrew® cannot be observed directly under a microscope. Instead, culture health is monitored through key parameters such as lactate and glucose, which provide scalable and reliable insights into cell growth.

Do I need to buy additional or specialized equipment to use the CellScrew®?

No special equipment is required beyond a standard roller bottle system. The CellScrew® is placed in an incubator on a roller device at a 10–15° angle to keep the filter cap dry. For parallel cultivation of three CellScrew® mini units, the CellScrew® mini TriDock is included with the first bundle order.
Find more instructions on the set-up of the CellScrew® on our Handling page and in our CellScrew® Expert Series.

Is the CellScrew® sterile?

Yes, the CellScrew® comes fully sterilized, as it is gamma irradiated. We strongly advise against autoclaving the CellScrew® as it can cause damage to the product’s structure and integrity.

Does CellScrew® require a surface coating?

No. Coating is not required, but the CellScrew® is compatible with all standard coatings for adherent cells, including coatings commonly used for stem cells such as iPSCs and MSCs.

How does the CellScrew® reduce its carbon footprint?

The CellScrew® is made from PLA, a bioplastic derived from renewable resources. Additionally, our 3D printing process uses up to 80% less material compared to injection molding, significantly reducing emissions.

Is the CellScrew® reusable?

CellScrew® is intended for single-use to ensure reproducibility and minimize contamination risk.

Is CellScrew® available in different sizes?

Yes. CellScrew® is available in multiple sizes and formats to support different culture scales. Detailed specifications are available upon request. Download the brochure or drop us a message to info@greenebt.com and we can walk you through this.

How is CellScrew® different from microcarriers, T-flasks, rollers or stacks?

CellScrew® features a structured 3D geometry that improves cell distribution, nutrient transfer, and scalability — without the complexity of microcarriers or the increased manual handling of several planar vessels.

Which applications is CellScrew® best suited for?

CellScrew® is ideal for adherent cell culture, cell expansion, process development, and scale-up studies. Common uses include HEK-seed train, cell banking, vaccine production, cell therapy manufacturing.

How can I evaluate CellScrew® in my lab? Can I get technical support?

Running a first trial with 3x CellScrew® mini is a great way to start. If you want to talk this through, please schedule a call with our team. Our team also provides direct technical and application support to help you implement CellScrew® successfully. Drop us a message at info@greenebt.com.

What quality documents can be provided? Is CellScrew® suitable for regulated environments?

Each CellScrew® is supplied with technical and quality documentation, including product specifications and certificates of conformity. CellScrew® is designed for robust and reproducible performance. Regulatory suitability depends on the specific application — contact us to discuss your requirements.
